IQ Cult.

A superb piece on real intelligence at Saker's site by Naresh Jotwani. Speaking on High IQ People (HIQP) he notes:
The truth value of a narrative does not count. What counts is only the result: Which narrative ‘looked like it carried the day’? That explains the HIQP’s 24×7 yakety-yak. In such an environment, rational debate is not possible. Rational debate requires mutual understanding and acceptance of the premises and the process of logical thinking. There is of course an unwritten rule of wise people that the premises must accord with reality, with truth. For HIQPs, all that matters is whether a debater is articulate, persuasive, photogenic, assertive and well-networked. There is no need to introduce any pesky ‘truth’ in the debate. It is far easier to just continue being articulate, persuasive … et cetera. Keep playing. Truth is a can which can always be kicked further down the road. Tomorrow is another day. If rational debate is not possible, can diplomacy succeed? Of course not! After all, diplomacy also has its premises and its conventions of debate.
It is a superb piece and it explains succinctly why there are so many dumbfucks and incompetent hacks with very high IQs in the US ranging from utterly imbecilic US main stream media to "academe", to Congress and even the White House. Read highlighted in yellow. Enjoy.

US "Conservatism."

Let me remind you one of my more recent opinions of the so called American conservatism.

3. Neocon cock sucking bunch of "exceptionalists" and war-mongering political outlet of the Military-Industrial Complex.
Evidently I am not the only one who doesn't see conservatism in the US. Bill Kauffman arrives to the same conclusion, of sorts, in The American Conservative yesterday.
I have long believed that the word conservative is sullied beyond reclamation, so my immediate answer to the question “What is American conservatism?” is “a Beltway-based racket exploiting the healthy instincts of decent Americans on behalf of the military-industrial complex, Wall Street, and the Republican Party.” But that answer is confuted by this very magazine, founded as it was in opposition to the criminal Iraq war and animated and inspirited, then and now, by principles and precious things that had long been forgotten or repudiated by most of the American Right: peace, place, humility, community, federalism, the Bill of Rights. The conservative movement was poisoned at its roots—or, should I say, its rootlessness. After the death of the noble Senator Robert Taft (R-OH) in 1953, “conservatism” at the national level came to be defined, to a grossly disproportionate degree, by ex-communists avid to slay the god that failed them. The resultant movement subordinated domestic felicity and the gloriously idiosyncratic Little America to the frenzied promotion of what William F. Buckley Jr. described as an “instrument of totalitarian bureaucracy within our shores,” which he said we must accept “for the duration” of the Cold War. But when the Soviet Union dissolved, we did not return to being a “normal country,” as Jeane Kirkpatrick, Reagan’s UN ambassador, had recommended, but instead sought out a dreary concatenation of new enemies to justify the warfare state. (Even now, bellicose opportunists have their eye on China, as the scare-by date of shoe-bomb jihadis is about up.)
I state ad nauseam for years now that the so called American "conservatism" has very little to do with, broadly, conservatism which MUST be rooted in nationalism. There is no conservatism without a nation, otherwise there is nothing to conserve. The United States never became a nation and, inevitably, American conservatism was bound to plant itself into the increasingly liquefying ideological sand of "anti" something. Anti-communism, anti-Russia, anti-China, anti-Iran, anything "anti". Anything based on "anti" inevitably led to a hollowing out always porous content of the American conservative thought which, even in its better manifestations, still cannot resign itself to recognition of the real reasons of America's post WW II greatness, as well as to the reasons why it is no more.
We may continue with this discussion forever, but Kauffman makes a correct observation:
America is not an idea, an abstraction, or a marketing slogan. It is our home, and the land we love above all others... Well, if conservatism doesn’t stand for home then it stands for nothing, and to hell with it.
Yes, this is better, but it may be too little, too late, and yes--American "conservatism" doesn't stand for home, because it was born out of geopolitical opportunism of WW II. It was then that the windfall of benefits of "Arsenal of Democracy" and all fighting done away from the America's shores convinced many that this is the way things work. They don't. A historic one-off, an anomaly often known as luck is not a pattern--it is a single data-point on the graph. Inevitably, globalism and imperialism is what defines a supposedly American "conservative" thought and it never stood for home because it didn't have one. Some random separate epiphanies among the rank and file of "conservative" thinkers in the US are by no means indicative of a trend. A trend is always the same--American exceptionalism and imperialism, home, from sea to shining sea, be damned, and that is the essence of American "conservatism".  So, to hell with it. And please, come up with a better "national" mythology. A present one is a joke.

Aerobatic Teams.

An interesting point. There is no doubt that Russian Knights and Swifts aerobatic teams are ONE OF the best in the world. Certainly top 5-6. In terms of solos they ARE the best in the world due to maneuvering characteristics of MiG-29s (Swifts) and SU-30 SMs (Russian Knights). Now Russian Knights transitioned to a combat aircraft which generally defies aerodynamics--SU-35C.
It is a massive upgrade and one can only imagine what those planes will be doing at the air shows. They will be stealing it. Go to around 6:20 (if you want to skip other mind-boggling maneuvers) in this video and prepare to pick your jaw from the floor.
But having said all that, I, in full consciousness, can not say that Russian Knights are ultimately the best. One of the best? Absolutely! Probably even top-2. But I have to admit that as a team  (formation) flying Blue Angels deliver. Their, namely team, flying is so amazing, that it is impossible to deny. It is insanely clean and tight.
Here are Knights in Lima, Peru.
Basically, top 5-7 teams in terms of formation flying are very closely matched: Thunderbirds, Swifts, Patroille de France, Frecce Tricolore etc. Plus, I hate all those fanboys' ratings of "top-10 best whatever", but in terms of formation flying the Blue Angels are probably the top team in the world. For now. And even this position is hotly contested by the number of superb aerobatic teams all around the globe and that is why I prefer a more neutral definition--one of the best in the world, because there is more than one. Let them all just give us all joy doing what they do best--beautiful flying.

Russia's Defense Ministry...

Decided to spoil us a little bit. Peter the Great shoots good ol' P-700 Granit (SS-N-19 Shipwreck) during naval forces assembly in Barents Sea. After that she (he) and Marshal Ustinov went and shot down some aerial targets.
Cannot wait to see Admiral Nakhimov taking to sea after modernization. That will be a sight to behold.

It Is Friday.

Marc Is the Queen and we have to admit it to ourselves. Brian May and Roger Taylor decided to play for Adam Lambert, but it is not Queen anymore. But people begin to understand that Queen (as is in Freddy) survives through Marc who is more than just reincarnation of Freddy, he is a top notch singer in his own right.
After all, it is kind of magic.
BTW, have you heard Marc's... everything.
And then, of course....

Marshal Shaposhnikov Is Out To Sea Trials.

Behold, renewed P-800 Oniks, Kalibr  and 3M22 Zircon, plus 8 X-35 Uran for a good measure, carrier went out to sea trials for the first time after modernization. A lot to take in.
This return to sea is much more significant than it may seem. This may be (and most likely is) one of the ways to radically increase firepower at the Far East by means of modernizing always superb hulls of the Large Anti-Submarine Ships (BPK) of project 1155, aka NATO Udaloy-class.

This Is...

Project 68-Bis Soviet Light Cruiser Mikhail Kutuzov:
It now serves as a museum in Novorossiisk and it is named after the savior of Russia from Napoleon, Count and Field-Marshal Mikhail Illarionovich Kutuzov. Kutuzov owned Russian serfs and was a rather rich man. So was legendary Alexander Vasilievich Suvorov. Suvorov, apart from being generalissimo was a man known for a very uneasy character, he was a  nobility and among his illustrious military achievements, apart from owning serfs, is (almost) a suppression of Pugachev's peasant uprising. But Soviet Communists somehow decided that not only he (as well as Kutuzov) merited most prized WW II orders named after them, but Soviet Navy had another project 68-Bis light cruiser named after Suvorov. Here she is:
Of course, Soviet Communists continued with this tradition of commissioning ships and naming highest state awards after counts and princes, all those "class enemies" of "proletariat" and owners of serfs. But all that didn't matter--all those noble and very rich people did one thing--they fought for Russia. Nobody cared and cares what their opinions on exploited and suppressed Russian peasants were. Even communists recognized that. The class didn't matter, as long as it was for the greater good. But then again, Russians are so lucky, it is so easy for them--no matter who you are, once Russia was invaded, everything was secondary and the hero, be him a simple peasant or a prince, who could actually own this peasant hero, was and remained a hero.

Not so, evidently in the US anymore.
Gen. Milley has weighed in on the subject of military bases whose names are associated with the Confederacy. He also adds some value judgements, presumably his own, regarding Confederate Officers and soldiers: “Like the country it serves, the U.S. military is fighting an internal battle against racism, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. Mark Milley said Thursday, but old names and symbols of that enemy are present and strong enough to sow division. “Divisiveness leads to defeat,” Milley told the House Armed Services Committee. “There is no place in our armed forces … for symbols of racism, bias or discrimination.” The Civil War was an “act of treason,” he said. The south’s military leaders betrayed their nation profoundly, and still, many military installations bear their names, according to Milley. “It was an act of treason at the time against the union, against the stars and stripes, against the U.S. Constitution, and those officers turned their back on their oath.”He goes on to support the removal of Confederate names and presumably symbols from the defence forces.
Alrighty then. Not that I care in particular about Confederacy and I, certainly, have a natural revulsion towards slavery, but still--correct me if I am wrong--the American Civil War was fought not against slavery. The slavery issue came up well into the war itself not least through the actions of one Russian dude who commanded one Yanks' regiment. The war was about states' rights. Right? So it is rather a complicated issue since South just wanted to go its own way. The consensus existed in the US prior to this woke session by Milley today, that a sort of reconciliation was reached on the issue of the Civil War, in the end Robert E. Lee had enough courage to call for reconciliation--not an easy thing to do for a defeated side. Yet, today, in 2020, the events of 160 years ago still cannot let many people rest just because of slavery? Can you imagine Russians disowning Kutuzov or Suvorov for owning serfs? Peter the Great was a bloody tyrant, granted a genius one, should Russians disown him? Russians erect monuments to him.

A normal person looking at the United States today will be struck by the scale of self-immolation of the country which loves to proclaim itself to be a shining city on the hill. It is shining, all right, with the bright flames of its burning institutions, from military, to academia, to history to governance. But the flame of cowardice burns with blinding white flame and for such a country, which cannot provide for its historic continuity, for better or worse, there is no future. With George Washington, a slave-owner, waiting to be dethroned, his accomplishments be damned, the US will cease to exist as a viable entity both geographically and in spirit which was too weak to fight for own survival. But then again, I warned about that.
