If This Is "Intelligence", Then I am...

Pope. Rebekah Koffler has an "impressive" (for DC) resume and she is "from the former USSR" and she is an embodiment of why the United States finds itself where it finds itself today vis-a-vis Russia and pretty much the rest of the world. There is very little about this Koffler lady on the internet, say how old is she and where in the USSR was she born precisely (she states she was born in Kazakhstan), but there is very little doubt in that she read too much of Solzhenitsyn and, judging by her appearance, she does look like my peer and that is why she is full o' shit. No, I am not talking about her book and "Russian hacking", I am talking about her urban myths and BS about the USSR she spews on the air at Fox (and elsewhere) and here is the latest this "Russia expert" delivers three days ago. 

Born and raised in a totalitarian state, I am intimately familiar with government spying on ordinary citizens. Recent revelations about possible actions surrounding government surveillance by the NSA took me back 30 years ago to a place that no longer exists, my birth country, the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics – the USSR.  In the course of daily life in the USSR, we assumed all our communications were monitored by the state. Back then, it was phone calls and snail mail. Speaking in code over the phone was common for ordinary Russians in order not to get in trouble with government authorities. We even had a special phrase, "This is not a phone conversation," to end a discussion veering into dangerous territory. Any criticisms of Soviet leaders, government control, or the socialist system could get you expelled from school or fired from work.

I am not claiming that the USSR was a "free" country in Western understanding but it is clear that I and millions of my peers and Rebekah lived in a different USSR and that this intelligence "professional" is milking her "Soviet" biography for some kind of gain, most likely monetary, and tells fairy tales about USSR popular among former Soviet (primarily Jewish, but not exclusively) Brighton Beach populace. For starters, why she lies: criticism and anecdotes about Soviet government and Communist Party were not just common, but they were spoken openly from smoking rooms to diners to even barracks in Soviet military (and she certainly has no experience with that) and nobody were persecuted let alone "expelled from schools", because the only reason to be expelled from any Soviet school was two fold--discipline and academic failure. Period. Hundreds of my peers, who entered naval academy with me in 1980, same as before that, or after, were political anecdotes and jokes telling, American jeans wearing, rock-music listening and long-haired dudes, have been checked by KGB (namely counter-intelligence) before even allowed to apply, well...

Never in my life have I heard of any kid "expelled" from the school on the bases she proposes and I met and studied with very many peers who were border-line asocial and anti-Soviet. One of my academy classmates made it into the KGB organization NEVER being in Komsomol, let alone  being a member of Communist Party and... had no problems in advancing along the career path. Koffler, obviously, when she left USSR at a young age, had only Soviet dissident narrative, much of it hearsay and outright BS, and urban myths to sell in the US, which was eager to listen to any contrived BS as long as it was instrumental in drawing a caricature of a country, they had no real understanding of. It is not surprising then, when having such "analysts" and "experts" as Koffler, who sounds like a keynote speaker at the regional Communist Party gathering and who deliberately oversells this "totalitarian thingy" for own benefit, that the US "intelligence community" has become a butt of a jokes around the world, especially in anything related to Russia. 

She claims that she was an analyst of "Russian strategy and cyber warfare", well, strategy is a very broad term, but Koffler's feeble attempts to sell her Soviet high school experiences as a valuable contribution to the intelligence field while having zero experience and education with Soviet institutes of state power and security, be that military or security services are telling, as are her misguided and incompetent attempts to draw parallels between the USSR and modern USA. She is no big thinker. She is also utterly militarily incompetent. Here is a proof from her book:

This is the "level" of "experts" who consulted and continue to consult on Russia inside the US and who think that two technological catastrophes such as F-35 and LCS are "capabilities" for the United States, then there is no surprise with the outcomes we all observe. You can extrapolate the rest of the skill-set for such "analysts". I am not gonna buy her book because I don't have time to review yet another pseudo-intelligence drivel (Koffler states that Steele Dossier was a Russian operation, face-palm) about Russia from a person who has zero background in both USSR and Russia and has only her past security clearance to wave around and use big words and catch phrases. I will just remind you of a superb piece by our esteemed guest Mark Hackard about another dissident BSer Yuri Bezmenov, who was selling exactly what Koffler sells--a hot air. Here is Mark's succinct conclusion about Bezmenov, which applies fully to Koffler:

This also explains why those "analysts" cannot find their own ass with both hands in a brightly lit room. They call it "intelligence."

I am still puzzled with the role Koffler ascribes to "advanced" Littoral Combat Ships in the "war with Russia". Unless she means to build so many of them that Russians exhaust completely their stock of anti-shipping missiles sinking them and then surrender? Then several thousand of LCS should be built. I am sure it was Russian clandestine operation too, to convince Pentagon to invest innumerable billions into shitty technologies, such as F-35 and LCS. It has got to be Russian operation. How else can you explain this clusterfuck. I am sure Koffler will write a book on that too. Nah, I am screwing with you.

A former employee of some serious US think-tanks and state bureaucracy, Mark Hackard, sent me an article on a very important topic and I gladly reproduce it here. I do not like espionage, albeit professionally when you serve in military you deal both with intelligence and counter-intelligence matters directly. Obviously not on the level of what amounts to a highest level of state espionage, but close enough to know sometimes high level people--comes with the territory. Over the past several years, the testimony of a previously obscure Soviet defector has grown ever more potent as America unravels into chaos. Should we trust him?

The late Yuri Bezmenov (1939-1993), styled a man who turned his back on the KGB and a “fighter against totalitarianism,” has gained exalted status among independent media commentators and has even found currency in the mainstream. Bezmenov, the son of a Red Army officer and trained in oriental languages, was a journalist for the Soviet news agency Novosti and scored a posting to India in the late 1960s. In 1970 he vanished from the USSR embassy colony disguised as a hippy and made his way to the West, where he would rail against the Soviet system, writing pamphlets like Love Letter to America; No Novosti is Good News; World Thought Police; and Black is Beautiful, Communism is Not.

As a Soviet defector, Bezmenov was readily available to denounce Moscow and the communist menace in Western media outlets. His shining moment, now filtered through a multitude of memes and short clips on social networks, was a 1984 interview with author G. Edward Griffin. Bezmenov sold himself to his audience as a former KGB operative and proclaimed that the Soviet Union was applying a Marxist strategy of subversion to undermine the United States from within. It consisted of four stages:

1. Demoralization
2. Destabilization
3. Crisis
4. Normalization

Bezmenov’s analysis and prognostications have since been seized upon by columnists and media personalities as proof of everything from a cultural Marxist drive to take over America to a specifically Russian plot with the same objective. He stars in a trailer for the video game Call of Duty: Black Ops – Cold War as a Cassandra warning of communist subversion. He has also featured in no less than the New York Times’ clumsy “Operation Infektion,” a 2018 video series informing us that Russian intelligence “hacked” the 2016 US presidential elections through disinformation operations.

Few, however, have called into question Bezmenov’s story and his claims, most tellingly his supposed status within the KGB’s First Chief Directorate (Foreign Intelligence). This biographical detail is what made his story sensational, as the defection of a mere Soviet journalist would hardly arouse much interest in the reading public. Yet that’s the hard truth – Bezmenov never served in the KGB.

Yuri Bezmenov was never a KGB staff officer for the First Chief Directorate or any other unit of the Soviet intelligence service. Nor did he ever see the inside of School 101, where future intelligence officers trained, Lubyanka, or the KGB residency in India. Bezmenov was a low-ranking newsman for Novosti who wrote propaganda, and after he switched sides, he plied the same trade on behalf of the Western powers. The KGB may indeed have used him as an informant – to keep an eye on contacts of interest – and for participation in occasional “active measures,” disseminating Soviet narratives and piecemeal disinformation to foreign media. Bezmenov’s position would have allowed for such possibilities. While a certain number of KGB officers would have worked undercover as journalists at Novosti (not the inflated 75% Bezmenov gives), Bezmenov wasn’t one of them.[i]

Bezmenov was also never a wizard of Soviet psychological warfare – he had no entry to the KGB First Chief Directorate’s Service A or the Communist Party’s Central Committee that oversaw its activities. Nor did Bezmenov, self-identified expert on active measures, ever mention Service A’s chief Maj. Gen. Ivan Agayants, or his successor Lt. Gen. Sergei Kondrashev. He demonstrates zero understanding of the strategic purpose of real active measures as practiced by the KGB. His supposed training in tabletop wargames and interrogation would have been part of cursory reserve officer mobilization courses mandatory for Soviet university students throughout the Cold War, not a special program that made Bezmenov a hardened expert in subversion. Indeed, the four-step process of subversion he claimed as a covert Soviet strategy could be gleaned by anyone well-versed in Sun Tzu and practical psychology. Further, Bezmenov provides no evidence of Soviet infiltration of American culture and institutions to advance a complex, globe-spanning campaign to implode the United States, only coarse ideological invective.

What Bezmenov embodies in Cold War espionage history, in exaggerated fashion, is the tendency of defectors to inflate their self-worth through ever-wilder claims. Anatoly Golitsyn, an actual KGB officer who crossed the Iron Curtain a decade before Bezmenov, forged a similar path with tales of a “Monster Plot,” including a false Sino-Soviet split, to deceive America and leave her ripe for conquest. Golitsyn enjoyed the patronage of James Jesus Angleton, the CIA’s chief of counterintelligence, and his theories were popular among suspicious cold warriors throughout the West.

I believe this piece to be of an ultimate import because as I state for years, decades really, what America "knows" about USSR/Russia is primarily trash or what I call a "solzhenitsified" version of it, concocted primarily through Russian (Jewish) dissident circles who always had their own agenda and scores to settle and knew WHAT the other side wanted to hear from them. They created such a grotesque caricature of  USSR and, recently, of Russia that I can only repeat Mark's closing question: who was subverting whom? Isn't it a valid question to ponder when contemplating today the fact that Russia, whose economy "was left in tatters", seems to be doing just fine and, in fact, somehow is not torn apart by political, ethnic, economic or cultural strife. Remember, to succeed one needs to be extremely well situationally aware, Sun Tzu anyone? I don't think US political top was aware of anything outside, as well as inside, US borders for a very long time. Mark's article is exactly about it. But then again, the reality is a difficult thing to face. 

Phantom Pains.

Thanks to Colonel Lang's diligence my attention was directed toward Syria--I am not going to comment on Armenia-Azerbaijan conflagration until I have a reliable data--and the role UK plays in trying to influence this conflict. Colonel's comments are on target when he states that:

Using really basic intelligence analytic tools; Occam's Razor, Walks like a duck, Smileyesque back azimuth's, etc. it has been clear that the UK government has been deeply involved in sponsoring and influencing the Syrian/ jihadi opposition in that miserable country.  The wide spread British Old Boys network of aspirants to the tradition of imperial manipulation has been visible just below the surface if you had eyes to look and a brain to think. A lot of the money for this folly came right out of USAID.

In fact, British "fingerprints" were all over the place since the git go in Syria and as the Greyzone reports, based on allegedly leaked UK government's 2014 document:

In other words, the UK Foreign Office and military crafted plans to wage a comprehensive media war on Syria. To establish an infrastructure capable of managing the propaganda blitz, Britain paid a series of government contractors, including ARK, The Global Strategy Network (TGSN), Innovative Communication & Strategies (InCoStrat), and Albany. The work of these firms overlapped, and some collaborated in their projects to cultivate the Syrian opposition.

There are absolutely no news in the fact that Al Jazeera, as one example among many, is a propaganda front for Qatar (accidentally, a big friend and enabler of ISIS, Daesh etc.)  and intelligence organizations with a "specific" agenda in the region, nor is it really news that good ol' boys, as Colonel calls them, from all kinds of primarily UK and US funny outlets find all kinds of applications to their "intelligence" skills in fomenting troubles--obviously all for the greater good of democracy and human rights--even up to training and equipping moderate terrorists, humanitarian jihadists and all other kinds of people who love to cut heads, disembowel people, rape women and in general maintain a highest standard of democratic values. 

America's involvement into  this bloody mess in the Middle East is understandable--it is wrong, often criminal, but it is understandable. Superpower's rah-rah, "best friend" Israel and shit of this nature, but UK in this whole thing is a comical entity, trying to address its phantom pains of Great Empire of the past so desperately that it is comical. Make no mistake, London City, banks, all this glory of the sun never setting on the empire, in the end--English Premiere League--try to counter this. The best, undeniably, league in the world, way better than La Liga or Bundesliga, and there is no denial of that. London still retains its Victorian grandeur in some places, where they are still able to maintain at least some acceptable norms of public safety and sanitation, but writing is on the wall. No matter how legendary and beloved Manchester United, or Liverpool, or Chelsea are for many around the globe, UK is a basket case economically, culturally and militarily. 

London may have some money, for now, it has no real international subjectivity and is in a perpetual search for this dopamine-laced feeling of self-importance and if it is by pretending that UK matters by means of support for all kinds of human trash, I am sure heirs to James Bond's glory will do it maintaining their stiff upper lip. I don't know if they know at the 10 Downing Street that they are pathetic, but the reality of UK is simply sad--it becomes fast a totalitarian state which is drowning in political correctness, UK's economy is in tatters (wink, wink, if you know what I mean):

London (CNN Business)UK economic output shrank by 20.4% in the second quarter of 2020, the worst quarterly slump on record, pushing the country into the deepest recession of any major global economy. This crash in GDP in the April-June period, compared with the first quarter, is the worst since quarterly records began in 1955. Industries most exposed to government lockdown measures to contain the coronavirus pandemic — services, production and construction — saw record drops. 

If one discards some famous UK manufacturing brands such as still relevant Rolls-Royce or some other aerospace elements tied into BAE Systems, there is very little, frankly, to talk about what UK produces anymore and what has any global trade impact by being competitive. The times of British glorious and highly relevant and viable national aerospace industry are gone forever, UK cannot anymore out of own resources and talent produce world-class combat jet, nor can she do it for a commercial aircraft, being fully integrated into Airbus "family" owning 20% stake with other 80% belonging to EADS. What else, what else... Ah, British Armed Forces are a joke. Today British Army numbers a whopping 79,000 of regular personnel and is getting ready to abandon tanks as a viable combined arms element altogether. Once glorious and legendary Royal Navy has enough ships and subs to demonstrate flag and, maybe, win another Falkland campaign against grossly inferior power, granted its two aircraft carriers will be able to deploy enough F-35Bs to the theater, but that is about it. In other words, UK is a military and economic backwater and I say this with a degree of sorrow. I, as many of my peers, grew up with great British literature, indeed, unique and massive British contribution in science, culture and other fields of human activity. Come on, we grew up with Beatles, Deep Purple and some quirky, and wonderful, British movies. In the end, Great Britain was our second most important ally in WW II. That Britain is no more. 

UK's trade balance is a negative 130 billion Pounds, the most popular boy's name in London is Mohamed, and in general things look so...promising for this once prosperous Kingdom that desperation is in the air. So, what's left? Right, try to play games adults play, get into chihuahua mode and get into the middle of the fight of mastiffs. How? Easy, you just read about it--make a stink that everyone notices you, that you are relevant, that you still can influence the events in the world and this may make a phantom pain of a gone greatness less acute. As for hundreds of thousands killed and millions displaced--no price is too high, because it is for the bloody greater good.

Time To Speak In Broadsides, It Is Still Not Too Late

The American "Left" is desperate. First, it is not real Left--it is a neo-liberal interventionist cabal more interested in war and post-modernist globalist Pax Americana than in the fate of old Left's ideas of economic disparity between what today is known as 1% and the rest. Secondly, speaking broadly, US is not multi-party political system anymore--it is one-party rule country which still pretends that it is "democracy" and "republic"--it is neither. US de facto is ruled by a single party of corrupt power-hungry hawks who have media propaganda machine at their disposal and classic American political distinction between  GOP and Democrats is, at this stage, irrelevant. After all, supposedly "dedicated" GOPers such as neocons had no problem changing their party affiliations and endorse Hillary who, in her political outlook, ideologically would fit well in either political "party". The only "difference" today between so called Democrats and Republicans is this "important" question of sexual minorities and the speed with which US must become Orwellian reservation. Both parties are in the pockets of Wall Street, Military-Industrial Complex and ethnic and religious mafias. Democrats want Orwellian "reality"  as fast as possible, Republicans are still trying to squeeze better deal for themselves and their donors while they can and then--no problem, the completion of the mad house, which US is increasingly reminiscent of, can commence unopposed. They still think that they will leave their lives out in gated communities--what a bunch of ignorant morons. This is just the start.

Yet, this Hillary's "Left" and political prostitute Ryan's "Right" are nervous, very nervous in a face of The Donald. I agree with many sensible observers of American political stage--Donald is a very flawed man, no doubt about that. Yet, by a strange (or may be not) coincidence he touched American nation's nerve and committed a criminal offense on a massive scale--he started talking about what majority of Americans really care about and talk, and think, among themselves. Establishment can not have this, because for them this means one thing--being accused of incompetence, malice and treason of majority of American people with all that this entails. I wrote a lot on the incompetence of US "elites" but desperate times call for desperate measures. In the latest salvo by HRC's campaign against Trump US media-machine pulls into the light yet another "expert". Enter  former US "intelligence officer" Malcolm Nance. 

Former U.S. intelligence officer: Russia has turned Trump into ‘unwitting asset’

Wow! But before we get into details of this "former intelligence officer's" Clanciesque BS, let's take a look at the guy himself. In the US this guy goes under such titles as: Malcolm Wrightson Nance (born 1961 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania) is an American career cryptologic senior chief petty officer, author, scholar and media commentator on international terrorism, intelligence, insurgency and torture. He is an internationally recognized expert in the history, personalities and organization of al Qaeda and its affiliates including the Islamic State of Iraq and Levant ISIL; jihadi radicalization, Islamic extremism in Middle East, Southwest Asian and African terror groups, as well as counterinsurgency and asymmetric warfare. Malcolm Nance practices in the fields of national security policy particularly in anti- and counter-terrorism intelligence, terrorist strategy and tactics, torture and counter-ideology in combatting Islamic extremism. In 2014 he became the executive director of the counter-ideology think tank the Terror Asymmetrics Project on Strategy, Tactics and Radical Ideologies (TAPSTRI) in Hudson, New York.

Before I start I want to make it very clear: throughout my feeble military career I served with many highly professional Chief Petty Officers some of whom were "professional cryptologists" or, in Russian, were called SPS (СПС--Связь Повышенной Скрытности) or The Increased Clandestine Communications. These were people who were the ones who carried what was known as not even Top Secret but Special Significance (Особой Важности), something akin to US Code Word status, cipher materials for communications systems and were extremely restrained people. Those, sometimes college-educated, Chiefs were NOT "cryptologists", in essence they were protocol care takers, nothing more. I do not want to go deep into this but in those times they physically delivered what was known as "seasonal materials"--things for which one, should he have lost or incorrectly destroyed those, could face a court marshal and very serious and long terms of imprisonment. In some other, severe, cases--one could face a "firing squad". The actual cryptology requires a very serious education in... math. Well, here we have a "scholar" who has a whole high school diploma behind him: Malcolm Nance is a graduate of West Catholic Boys High School in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. 

Well, let's see what his competences were in the US Navy and for that we go to the... US Navy's careers site. As you can see immediately, this Malcolm Nance "scholar" guy most likely was a cryptologist technician with all things this, with all my love and respect to technicians, expertise level entails--purely narrow focused set of skills. Well, anything above this technician focus, that is even junior officer position, as we can see, requires: Within Navy Cryptology, there are distinct focus areas that have their own training paths and job descriptions. Each CT role works under the oversight of Cryptologic Warfare Officers (four-year degree required) or Cyber Warfare Engineers (four-year degree required) – and potentially both. Nance, doesn't have any of it and while we shouldn't doubt his possible serious experience as a cryptology care taker, I doubt he can be described as real serious intelligence officer who has the ability to pass judgements on the subject matter which requires a completely different academic, experience and military-intelligence level. Yet, this self-proclaimed "scholar" had no problem dropping one of the stupidest and ignorant platitudes for the sake of Hillary's campaign: The intelligence term, Nance explained, refers to “someone who thinks they’ve adopted a position but that position has been carved out for them, groomed for them.” “They’ve been put into a position where they can actually carry out the wishes of another power,” he said. “Lenin used to call these people ‘useful idiots.’”

So, the guy thinks that he is qualified, which he is not (not even close), to pass the judgement on what could only be described as the greatest operation of influence in history by turning Donald Trump in Russian Manchurian candidate?  Absolutely, this guy really thinks so. Not only that, look at this:

      

This guy already managed to write a "book" which went on sale on Amazon on October 10. Talk about convenient coincidence but the the question has to be asked: does this "intelligence officer" really know on what level and who plans and executes such level of operations? If he says yes, this "expert" if full o' shit. Can this "internationally renown" specialist in Al Qaeda support his "theses" on anything Russia-related? We all know the answer. The guy is invested in HRC's campaign and uses a military and intelligence lingo and titles to BS incompetent public thus revealing himself as a paid stooge of Hillary and those who are behind her. But let's recall what really serious people (with many serious degrees) stated recently--I refer to Nicholas Gvozdev: 

Last year, the calculation of Saudi Arabia—and by extension of the United States—was that Russia could not sustain its more assertive position in the Middle East (and other parts of the world) in light of declining energy prices, and that unsheathing the oil weapon would curb Kremlin ambitions. This was wrong. Today, it is Saudi Arabia that has begun to search for ways to firm up oil prices while Rosneft—Russia’s state oil company—declares that it has no need for capping production. Syria has not proven to be the quagmire that President Obama said it would be for Moscow. The Russia-Turkey partnership now seems to be back on track while Ankara’s ties with Washington worsen. While the Trans-Pacific Partnership, America’s signature economic initiative for Asia, is on political life support, Chinese president Xi Jinping will travel to the BRICS summit in Goa later this week to unveil ambitious proposals for free trade arrangements that bypass the West.  

If this truly educated man (Gvozdev), who spent years teaching US Naval officers in Naval War College had to admit that the US calculations, assumptions and decisions on Russia were wrong--and those were made by people who, unlike our "expert", actually are very high-ranking analytical and intelligence people, some with damn serious degrees--any comments by some Chief who spreads some dead Clanciesque and le Carre's "intelligence" cliches and myths are, frankly, preposterous. Nance's "opinions" on Russia are nothing more than a propaganda fodder and lies on the subject Malcolm Nance can not possibly have any competent opinion precisely for the reasons of him never operating on any, even junior, intelligence level in anything related to Russia. Those who did buy his "opinion", failed miserably, accepting politically-driven BS from some low level hack in support of Hillary and against Trump which is ridiculous. Time to speak in broadsides. I would suggest Mr. Nance to stick to what he supposedly is "expert" in--Al Qaeda--and to try to stop spreading BS both about Trump and Russia, albeit at this stage, it makes no difference for Russia at all.
